An Edinburgh family is honoring their late father, Patrick ‘Pat’ McGachan, who passed away in November 2023 after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) two years prior. Pat left behind his children Scott, Stuart, Claire, and six grandchildren. To raise funds for MND research, Scott and Stuart McGachan are organizing a Beatles Marathon for the second year in a row as a tribute to their father.
MND is a disease that affects the brain and nerves, causing weakness and deterioration over time. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for MND, only treatments to help manage the symptoms. Pat, a huge Beatles fan, first noticed something was wrong when he experienced difficulties while playing the guitar. The family was devastated by the diagnosis but tried to stay positive in the face of such a challenging situation.
In memory of their father, Scott and Stuart organized the first Beatles Marathon in Edinburgh in November 2023, inviting bands from all over Scotland to participate. Inspired by Sgt. Peppercorn’s Marathon in Columbus, Ohio, the family hoped that Pat would be able to witness the UK’s first Beatles Marathon. However, Pat passed away at the age of 73 just weeks before the event.
The McGachan family has decided to continue the tradition and organize the Beatles Marathon for a second year at the Portobello Town Hall. The funds raised from the event will support the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, which provides assistance to individuals and families affected by MND. Twelve talented Edinburgh bands will be taking on 13 albums by The Beatles, with Scott and Stuart both participating in the event.
The Beatles Marathon will take place on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at the Portobello Town Hall. The event promises to be a celebration of music and a tribute to their beloved father. For more information about the event and ticket details, you can visit https://beatlesmarathon.com/.
The McGachan family’s commitment to raising awareness and funds for MND research is a testament to their love for their father and the impact he had on their lives. The Beatles Marathon serves as a fitting tribute to a man who was not only a fan of the band but also a beloved father and grandfather. Through their efforts, the family hopes to make a difference in the lives of those affected by MND and honor the memory of their father in a meaningful way.
