A young man in Edinburgh was taken into custody after a firework incident at Nicolson Square in the city center. The authorities were alerted to the situation on the evening of October 28. The 18-year-old was charged with “culpable and reckless behavior” by the police. Police Scotland is asking the public to report any concerns they may have regarding the misuse of fireworks.

In a statement posted on social media, it was mentioned that the 18-year-old male was arrested for his involvement in the firework incident at Nicolson Square. The public is encouraged to prevent their area from becoming a hotspot for fireworks by reporting any suspicious activity related to fireworks to the police or anonymously to Crimestoppers.

As Bonfire Night approaches, certain neighborhoods in Edinburgh, such as Balerno, Calton Hill, Niddrie, and Seafield, have been designated as ‘firework control zones’ to safeguard emergency services, communities, and animals. Residents have been informed that these zones will be effective from 8am on November 1 until midnight on the 10th. This decision comes after an incident in Niddrie last year where a large group of youths attacked emergency service personnel with fireworks and petrol bombs.

The new regulations make it illegal to use fireworks in these specified zones on certain dates unless it is part of a licensed display approved by the local council. Those found guilty of breaking this law could face a prison sentence of up to six months or a fine of up to £10,000, or both.

It is important for the public to be aware of the regulations regarding fireworks and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities. By following the rules and guidelines set in place, we can ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in the community during the upcoming Bonfire Night celebrations.
