The disturbing scene took place during Bonfire Night, with violent gangs roaming the streets and riot police being called in to intervene. In the video, around 20 youths can be seen causing chaos, with one individual jumping on the car’s windscreen while another smashes it with a shovel. Meanwhile, at a car garage on Calder Road, new vehicles were also targeted and damaged by youths armed with bats and clubs.
Eyewitness reports and videos from the scene showed bins being thrown onto the street and fireworks being aimed at cars and a petrol garage. Police officers quickly responded to the situation, with public order officers locking down the area and riot police charging towards the troublemakers in Niddrie. The officers, equipped with helmets and shields, faced off against hooded youths who were egging them on and filming the confrontation on their phones.
Despite the chaos, police reported that incidents of serious disorder during Bonfire Night had actually decreased compared to previous years. Last year, there were 26 separate occasions where specialist resources had to be deployed in Scotland under Operation Moonbeam. This year, that number decreased to 18 deployments, with fewer injured officers as well. Firework-related calls remained steady, but the number of officers injured by projectiles had significantly reduced from the previous year’s total of 62 across Scotland.
