Police in East Lothian are currently investigating a disturbing incident where two seals were allegedly attacked by a man near the harbour on Victoria Road in North Berwick. The incident was reported to the authorities around 4.45pm on Thursday, November 28th.

According to Police Constable Ali Whitby, Wildlife Crime Coordinator, the investigation is still ongoing and they have reached out to partner agencies to ensure the welfare of the seals. They are urging anyone who may have witnessed the attack to come forward and provide any information that could assist in the case.

In light of this incident, the police are reminding the public, especially dog owners, to be cautious when accessing beach areas, particularly during the winter season. Seals and their pups are known to rest near the shore during this time, and it is important to give them space and not disturb them. It is illegal to interfere with wild animals unless they are clearly in distress or showing signs of injury. In such cases, the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) should be contacted.

The police have provided contact information for anyone with relevant details about the incident to reach out either directly to the authorities or anonymously through Crimestoppers. It is crucial for the community to come together to protect wildlife and ensure that such incidents are thoroughly investigated and addressed.

It is essential for everyone to be mindful of their surroundings and the wildlife that inhabits these areas. By following guidelines and respecting the natural habitat of these animals, we can all contribute to their safety and well-being.

As we continue to enjoy the beauty of our coastal areas, let us also remember our responsibility to coexist harmoniously with the wildlife that calls these places home. Together, we can create a safer and more nurturing environment for all beings.
