Edinburgh is getting its first inland surf resort, Lost Shore Surf Resort, which will open on November 11. This £60 million facility, located in Ratho just outside the city, features Europe’s largest wave pool. The resort is expected to attract surfers of all levels, from beginners to professionals. The wave pool, powered by Wavegarden technology, can generate up to 1,000 waves per hour and covers an area three times the size of Wembley Stadium’s pitch.
Professional Scottish surfer Ben Larg described Lost Shore as a game-changer for the surfing community in Scotland. He believes it will become a top training facility for surfers and will lead to the emergence of more professional surfers in the country. The resort offers surf lessons, surfskating, luxury accommodation pods for up to eight guests, various dining options including the popular Edinburgh pizzeria Civerinos, wellness treatments, a sauna, and a waterfront bar.
In addition to providing a unique surfing experience, Lost Shore is also dedicated to promoting inclusivity in sports. The resort partners with charities like Inclusive Surfing Scotland and The Wave Project to offer adaptive surfing and surf therapy programs. This commitment to diversity and community engagement is expected to bring in around 160,000 visitors annually, create 130 new jobs, and contribute £11 million to the local economy each year.
According to Stephen Leckie, Chair of VisitScotland, this investment in activity tourism is significant not only for the region but for the entire country. The opening of Lost Shore Surf Resort marks the largest investment in Scottish sporting infrastructure since the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and it is expected to have a lasting impact on the surfing scene in Scotland. With state-of-the-art facilities, world-class waves, and a commitment to inclusivity, Lost Shore is set to become a premier destination for surfers from across Europe.
