Some neighborhoods in Edinburgh have been designated as ‘firework control zones’ in preparation for Guy Fawkes night. The zones will be enforced in Balerno, Calton Hill, Niddrie, and Seafield to ensure the safety of emergency services, communities, and pets. Residents have been notified that the restrictions will be in place from 8am on Friday, November 1 until midnight on the 10th. This decision follows a disturbing incident last year in Niddrie where a group of youths attacked emergency personnel with fireworks and petrol bombs.
In addition to Niddrie, Sighthill also experienced similar disorderly behavior. The new regulations make it illegal to use fireworks in these designated zones on specific dates unless it is part of a licensed display approved by the local authority. Offenders could face imprisonment for up to six months or a fine of up to £10,000, or both.
Val Walker, the Culture and Communities Convener, stated that the Culture and Communities Committee supported the implementation of the Firework Control Zones in these areas from November 1 to 10. This initiative aims to prioritize community safety, protect emergency service workers, and ensure the welfare of animals. The goal is to evaluate the effectiveness of these measures in the first year and gather feedback for future implementation, with extensive community consultation planned for 2025.
Bonfire Night and the use of fireworks can be a time for communities to come together and celebrate. It is hoped that these control zones will enable safe and enjoyable celebrations for all residents.
