Edinburgh police have designated 13 neighbourhoods as ‘dispersal zones’ in preparation for bonfire night. The areas include Gorgie, Saughton, Oxgangs, Liberton, Gilmerton, Gracemount, Portobello, Niddrie, Moredun, Muirhouse, Craigentinny, Pilton, and Edinburgh City Centre. The dispersal zones will be active from 2pm on November 1 to midnight on November 5.

Police Scotland stated that they are taking this measure because they believe that certain groups of people may cause alarm or distress to the public. Under the dispersal zones, police officers have the authority to disperse groups of two or more individuals if their presence or behavior is deemed to be causing alarm or distress. Officers can also direct individuals to leave the area or prevent them from returning for a specified period.

It is important to note that contravening the directions given by an officer within a dispersal zone can lead to arrest without warrant. This decision comes after an incident in Niddrie last year, where a large group of youths attacked emergency service personnel with fireworks and petrol bombs. Another neighborhood, Sighthill, also experienced similar disorder.

In addition to dispersal zones, some neighborhoods in Edinburgh have been designated as ‘firework control zones’ ahead of Guy Fawkes night. Using fireworks in these zones on specific dates is a criminal offense unless part of a licensed display. Offenders could face imprisonment for up to six months or a fine of up to £10,000.

These measures aim to ensure the safety and security of residents during the bonfire night celebrations. It is crucial for the public to adhere to the guidelines set by the authorities to prevent any incidents of anti-social behavior or violence.
