An Edinburgh community is currently under lockdown by the police, with the force helicopter circling the area following violent incidents. The disorder in Niddrie’s Hay Drive area involved individuals targeting police officers with fireworks and bricks, as reported by Police Scotland. Additionally, Lothian Buses were also damaged by projectiles, leading to the closure of Niddrie Mains Road from Greendykes Road to Duddingston Park South. These events unfolded around 9 pm on October 31.
This is not the first time such scenes have occurred in the area, as similar incidents have been witnessed in recent years where riot police faced attacks from masked gangs of youths. As a result, a police helicopter was dispatched to the area to provide support. Residents have been advised to steer clear of the affected area until the situation is resolved.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland commented, stating, “We are currently addressing reports of disorder involving fireworks in the Hay Avenue area of Edinburgh. Individuals have targeted police vehicles and public transport with fireworks and missiles, including bricks. Road closures have been implemented at the junctions of Niddrie Mains Road and Duddingston Park South, as well as Niddrie Mains Road and Greendykes Road. Local officers, along with public order colleagues, are working to address the situation. Please avoid the area.”
Niddrie is among the four Edinburgh areas designated as Firework Control Zones, making it illegal to set off fireworks between November 1-10 without proper licensing from the local authority. This move aims to regulate the use of fireworks and prevent incidents of disorder and violence.
The escalation of such events highlights the importance of community safety and law enforcement efforts to maintain peace and order. It is crucial for residents to cooperate with authorities and adhere to regulations to ensure the well-being of everyone in the area. The impact of such incidents extends beyond the immediate disruption, affecting the overall sense of security and tranquility in the neighborhood.
As the situation unfolds and investigations continue, it is essential for residents to stay informed and follow updates from official sources. By working together and supporting law enforcement efforts, communities can address challenges and uphold a safe environment for all. Let us strive towards unity and cooperation in overcoming obstacles and promoting harmony within our neighborhoods.
