Glenkinchie Distillery in East Lothian recently faced a unique challenge when trying to introduce yoga classes at their visitors center. The distillery wanted to offer both indoor and outdoor yoga classes, but they were unsure whether yoga should be classified as a sport or a spiritual activity. After discussions with the East Lothian licensing officers, the distillery decided to apply for a change to their license to allow yoga classes.
Following the decision to change their license, the distillery began exploring other events they could host at the visitors center. They submitted a wide range of activities for consideration, including Pilates, ceilidhs, and events offering refreshments. Additionally, they looked into organizing bigger events such as cycling and running races.
The inspiration for these new events came from the demand for yoga classes. The distillery spokesperson explained that the landscaped gardens at the visitors center would be an ideal location for yoga classes, both indoors and outdoors. This led them to consider what other changes they could make to enhance the visitor experience.
The new license would allow for a variety of activities, including dancing facilities, charity events, talks, lectures, and demonstrations. It would also encompass “holistic wellbeing activities” like yoga and Pilates, as well as ceilidhs. The distillery could also serve as a starting, finishing, or stopping point for races.
Despite the wide range of proposed activities, there was only one objection from a local resident. The resident expressed concerns about potential congestion and dangerous driving conditions that could arise from cycling and running events at the distillery. However, the board’s licensing standards officer confirmed that there had been no previous complaints about the premises, which were well-managed.
During the meeting, Board convenor Lachlan Bruce expressed his satisfaction with the application. He deferred the question of whether yoga is a sport to others and the board unanimously approved the variations to the license.
Overall, the Glenkinchie Distillery in East Lothian is set to offer a unique and diverse range of activities for visitors to enjoy. From yoga and Pilates classes to ceilidhs and charity events, the distillery is aiming to provide a holistic and engaging experience for all who visit.
